When you are in college, you need to be aware of ways to stay safe. It is important to avoid putting yourself in dangerous situations. You can be prepared if you follow these general safety tips.

Don’t Be Distracted by Your Phone

It is easy to put your earphones on and watch a video or look at your phone while you listen to music. You can become caught up in your phone and lose awareness of what is happening around you. This can make you vulnerable to danger because your instincts won’t kick in. Make sure that you wait to look at your phone until you are in a safe location. If you need to listen to music, you should keep one ear open so that you can pay attention to who and what is around you.

Always Have a Buddy When You Are Walking at Night

You should never walk alone in the dark at night. You are putting yourself in a potentially dangerous situation, and you are much safer if you have a friend with you. Try to plan ahead so that you don’t get caught having to walk alone at night.

Lock Your Doors

Some people feel safe in a dorm or in an apartment building. However, you should always keep your door locked. If someone wants to commit a burglary, they will look for an unlocked door. It is easy for them to get in and take what they want. Lock your doors as a precaution.

Always Have Emergency Money with You

You should always have cash with you in case of an emergency. You don’t want to be in a situation where you need cash to get a ride or to get to safety, only to find that you don’t have any. Designate an amount of money that you always have put aside for safety.

Become Familiar with Your Campus

Paying attention to your surroundings is even easier when you know the layout. You should take the time to know the layout of your campus. Learn the different streets and paths so that you can quickly get to safety if you need to.
